Hello creatives!

My name is Josh Diaz from Videos by Josh.

Today, I want to talk about a recent golfing adventure I had on Canada Day 2023 in the picturesque town of Killarney, Manitoba. Armed with the incredible Ricoh GR3 camera. I took to the links at the Killarney Lakeside Golf Club with one goal, to take some great photos with my point-and-shoot camera. I also wanted to shoot a good game, so I suppose that’s actually two goals…

Anyway, join me as we dive into my Canada Day golf game. Scroll to the bottom to see a gallery of Ricoh GR III sample images.

The Ricoh GR III

When it comes to capturing moments with precision, the Ricoh GR III camera truly excels.

With its compact size and powerful features, it is the perfect companion for any photography enthusiast. Whether you're a professional or an amateur, this camera delivers exceptional image quality and performance. However, the form factor and purpose-built design lend themselves to a photographer who is comfortable with the process of taking photos.

If you know what you're doing, you can turn off the rear screen of the Ricoh and take pictures completely blind! Doing so will conserve battery at the expense of having a screen to frame your shots.

I really like the colors in this photo. The GR III Film Emulation is hard at work!

Exploring Canada Day in Killarney, Manitoba:

Killarney, known for its breathtaking natural beauty, provided an ideal backdrop for my golfing adventure on Canada Day. The pristine golf course, surrounded by lush greenery and picturesque landscapes, was a photographer's paradise. I couldn't have asked for a better setting to put the Ricoh GR III to the test.

The Ricoh GR III has fast autofocus, which allowed me to freeze each swing and candid moment with clarity. The camera's 24-megapixel sensor and wide-angle lens beautifully captured the golf course's expansive vistas and stunning details.

I enjoyed using the snap focus function for photos I could take at a predictable distance.

One of the standout features of the Ricoh GR3 is its ability to shoot in RAW format, ensuring maximum flexibility and image quality during post-processing. However, I completely ignored that, instead choosing to shoot in one of Ricoh's fantastic film emulation profiles. The Positive Film preset was punchy and had excellent contrast.

I shot the entire day in this profile, and in my Ricoh GR III review I also used these modes frequently.

The 28mm focal length of the Ricoh GR III is great for rendering the entire scene.

Golf Course Street Photography

As many fans of the camera can attest, the Ricoh GR III was designed for street photography. At no point did the designers ever anticipate its application in the field of sports. And while I'm not trying to capture your typical style of sports action shots, as a documentary camera, the Ricoh GR III is top tier.

From the anticipation at the first tee to the elation of sinking a putt, the Ricoh GR III never missed a beat. Its high-speed continuous shooting mode ensured that I could capture the swift motion of the golf swing, resulting in a series of captivating action shots. The camera's intuitive controls and user-friendly interface allowed me to focus on the game while effortlessly capturing the excitement around me.

I think the Ricoh GR IIIX would have also excelled in this environment, utilizing it’s longer 40mm lens. When you’re not backed up against a tight space it gives both cameras ample room to work.

Again, the GR III does a great job with the dynamic range.

Sharing the Joy Through Video

I tried to capture one quick video with the Ricoh GR III, but it was so bad I immediately deleted it. Rumour has it that if you buy this camera for video, you’ll be destined for disappointment.

Ready to tee off.

Conclusion

The Ricoh GR III camera proved to be an invaluable companion during my Canada Day golfing adventure in Killarney, Manitoba. Its exceptional image quality, versatile features, and compact design make it a standout choice for any photography enthusiast. It's a specific tool with a specific set of capabilities. If you're looking for a camera that can capture the documentary vibe of your experiences and bring them to life, the Ricoh GR III is an excellent option.
