Sony Alpha FX3 Cinema Camera for Photography? A Week-long Test in Maui.

Aloha, creatives.

I just got back from a nice tropical vacation in Maui. All I can say is that I am impressed. Not just by the beautiful sandy beaches and the delicious saltwater food but by the photographic capabilities of the new Sony Alpha FX3 Full-Frame Cinema Camera.

Did you take a cinema camera on vacation to the beach? Yes, I did. I also used this video camera to take photos because it technically can take pictures. When you have 12 whole megapixels to work with you sure can’t skimp, but perhaps it could be enough to document this island trip.

Let’s take a look…

Of course, the camera did not go alone. Supporting gear included:

I only take a little equipment on vacation. I like to take a single lens to promote creativity and improvisation.

Overall I liked the FX3 for photography, with some obvious caveats. Coming from Sony Alpha bodies, I enjoyed the smaller APSC-style body on the FX3. In addition, the sleek metal construction made the camera easy to hold and operate. I did miss my viewfinder, but I made do with a point-and-shoot style reminiscent of my time doing street photography in New York City.

Despite the low pixel count - I never felt truly hampered by the videocentric nature of the camera. Look at the photos and see if you can tell which ones have added crop.

This blog is your reminder to break from tradition and try a new combo occasionally.
